04 / Four situations + editable opener
Start with one sentence.
A parent who dismisses it. A sibling who has gone quiet. A request for space. Find an opening that sounds like you.
Your note ↓01 / Choose the situation
Where does
the conversation start?
Use this only with someone you feel safe speaking to. You can choose not to start the conversation.
02 / Make it sound like you
A first sentence,
not a whole speech.
If the answer is dismissive
“I am grateful. I am also having a hard time. Both can be true.”
An opening is an invitation. You cannot control how someone responds.

Practical guidance.
Room for your own experience.
A conversation you can actually have
You do not need a perfect speech. Choose a moment when you both have time, ask whether they are ready to talk, and keep the first request small. A walk, the drive home, or a cup of cha may feel easier than sitting down for a big announcement.
You can care about family harmony and still ask for something to change. You can also decide that someone is not the right person for this conversation.
If the first response is difficult
You can say: “I hear that you see it differently. I am asking you to listen to what this has been like for me.” If it is going nowhere, you can pause: “I do not think we can talk about this well right now. Let us stop here.”
If speaking up could put you at risk, prioritise your safety and seek help from a trusted person or qualified professional. These examples are not a safety plan or advice for handling abuse.
