Welcome & Fateh Amar

Open the session:
"Let's start by taking 3 deep breaths together... in through the nose... out through the mouth. One more. Great.

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh!

Welcome to our very first class. My name is Amar, and this is Sukhi. We're going to be spending time together every month learning something really cool.

Let's go around the room — say your name and one word for how you're feeling right now. Any word. Happy, tired, hungry, nervous — there's no wrong answer."

Go around the room quickly. Acknowledge each answer with a nod — no judgement, just listening.

Man Jeetai Jag Jeet Amar

Introduce the concept:
"This whole program is built around one line from Gurbani. It's five words, and it might be the most powerful thing you ever learn:"
ਮਨ ਜੀਤੈ ਜਗ ਜੀਤੁ
"By conquering the mind, you conquer the world" — SGGS Ang 6
Break it down:
"Let's break it down. ਮਨ (Mann) — that's your mind. Not just your brain, but your thoughts, your feelings, your reactions. Everything happening inside you right now.

ਜੀਤੈ (Jeetai) — conquer, master, win over.

ਜਗ ਜੀਤੁ (Jag Jeet) — you conquer the world.

Guru Ji is saying: the biggest battle isn't out there. It's in here. (point to head) If you can understand your own mind — your emotions, your reactions, what makes you angry, sad, scared — you become unstoppable. That's what this class is about."

Emotion Faces Game Sukhi

Get them moving:
"Alright, let's play a game! I'm going to call out an emotion and you show me the face. Ready?

Show me happy! — In Punjabi that's ਖੁਸ਼ੀ (khushi). Say it with me: khushi!

Now show me sad! — That's ਉਦਾਸੀ (udaasi). Say it: udaasi!

Show me angry!ਗੁੱਸਾ (gussa). Say it: gussa!

Now scared!ਡਰ (darr). Say it: darr!

Last one — show me surprised! Go!"
Go deeper:
"Nice! Now here's a harder question: when you feel gussa — anger — where do you feel it in your body? Does your face get hot? Do your fists clench? What about udaasi — sadness? Does your chest feel heavy?"

Pair-share: Turn to the person next to you and tell them: "When I feel ___, I feel it in my ___." Give them 90 seconds, then take 2-3 shares.

5 Jewels & 5 Thieves Preview Amar

Set up the year:
"So here's the thing — Guru Ji teaches that there are 5 thieves (Panj Chor) that try to steal control of your Mann. They are:

ਕਾਮ (Kaam) — desire / wanting too much
ਕ੍ਰੋਧ (Krodh) — uncontrolled anger
ਲੋਭ (Lobh) — greed
ਮੋਹ (Moh) — unhealthy attachment
ਹੰਕਾਰ (Hankaar) — ego / pride

But here's the good news — we also have 5 virtues that fight back:

ਸਤ (Sat) — truth
ਸੰਤੋਖ (Santokh) — contentment
ਦਯਾ (Daya) — compassion
ਨਿਮਰਤਾ (Nimrata) — humility
ਪਿਆਰ (Pyaar) — love

Every emotion we talk about this year connects back to these. When anger controls you — that's Krodh winning. When you respond with compassion instead — that's Daya winning. This class is about making sure the jewels win more often than the thieves."

Draw Your Mann Sukhi

Hand out materials:
"Here's a sheet with the outline of a head. This represents your Mann — your mind right now, today.

I want you to draw or write whatever is on your mind inside the head. It could be feelings, worries, things you're excited about, a person, a song stuck in your head — anything. There's no wrong answer. Use colours if you want.

You've got about 4 minutes. Go!"

Walk around, encourage, don't peek unless invited. After 4 minutes:

Wrap up the activity:
"Who wants to share one thing from their Mann? Just one thing."

Take 2-3 volunteers. Affirm each one: "That's real. Thanks for sharing."

Close-Out Both

End with energy:
"Before we go — one thing. Turn to someone near you and tell them one thing you'll remember from today. Just one thing. Go."

(30 seconds)

"This is going to be an amazing year. We're going to learn about our emotions, learn Gurbani, and become the kind of Singhs and Kaurs who conquer their minds. Remember:"

(Everyone together) "Man Jeetai Jag Jeet!"

"Let's end the way we always will. Bole So Nihaal..."
(Kids respond) "Sat Sri Akaal!"
Materials needed:
  • Head outline activity sheets (1 per kid)
  • Coloured pencils / crayons
  • Emotion cards display (ਖੁਸ਼ੀ, ਉਦਾਸੀ, ਗੁੱਸਾ, ਡਰ)
